With many thanks to John Lokesley in Gloucestershire, who checked the 1841 census for Edmund and Eleanor, and to Gordon Beavington, Canada; for transcribing the 1851 (plus) Censuses of Gloucestershire which is available on CD.
NB There is an Edward BUTLIN of Coln St Dennis mentioned in the Gloucestershire Wills Index (GWI), details given as P113, for 1771. The will, however, was unobtainable, but the GWI shows that BUTLINs were in this area at that time. No other BUTLINs could be found. If details can be found, then it could be that the Edward mentioned above could be related somehow to our Edmund - below - eg grandfather or great uncle.
The BUTLIN lineage, confirmed, is as follows
Generation 1
1. Edmund BUTLIN born 1801 in Coln St Dennis, Gloucestershire, occupation Labourer, was married on 16th April 1821 at Chedworth to Eleanor JAMES born 1799 in Maisey Hampton, Gloucestershire (many thanks to Robin Holley of Wiltshire Emigration Index for this). In the censuses for 1841, 1851, and 1861, Edmund’s occupation is given as an Ag Lab. In the 1871 census he is shown as a Farm Lab (when he is 70 years of age). Eleanor is 62, in 1861 and 73 in 1871. During their married life they lived in Coln Rogers. In 1851 living with them is their grand-daughter Mary* aged 5 born in Northleach (approx 1846); is this the daughter of Thomas (when he was unmarried!), Edmund, or another son born before 1825, and who would have left home before the census being taken in 1841. Edmund and Eleanor both died between 1871 and 1881. Question: Did Edmund have a brother John b1809, a Tailor in Coln St Dennis? (Information on John Butlin is shown in a separate document as shown in the 1851 census for Coln St Dennis.) Also there is at about the same time in the area a Isabella Butlin. Could she be a sister of Edmund?

along. He was an ag.lab. Eliza his wife aged 58, born Bibury, Gloucs;
in approx 1823 - this is SW of Coln Rogers. They married approx 1849.
In the 1851 census he is listed as an Ag Lab at Winson. Edwin is aged 1,
born in 1851, and 21 in 1871 and by then a Farm Lab by profession.
In the 1861 census, Joseph is shown as living there, though the census
is ‘just about impossible to read’. By 1871 he is aged 49 years,
a farm lab, born in Coln Rogers, and not Chedworth, and still living in
Winson. In 1851 Eliza is aged 28 born in Bibury, and 48 in 1871.
My mother says that the Splash Cottages are still there (Oct 2000).
In 1881 they were living at 5 Splash Cottages, Coln Rogers, Gloucestershire.
Children of Joseph and Eliza:
i) Edwin BUTLIN born approx 1850, In 1881 he is living with his
parents aged 31, at Winson, Gloucs (Is Charles mentioned above, his brother?).
Edwin is an Ag Lab and married, though we don’t have any details on the
wife, or where she was residing, Edwin and his wife must have married in
around 1874, as they have a son Edwin C BUTLIN who was born around 1875,
in Lydney, Gloucs; he is aged six at the time of the census.
Also living with them is William EDGWORTH (nephew), (is this nephew
of Joseph, or nephew of Eliza), he is an Ag Lab and from Bibury, Gloucs.
No age is given, could he be in his late teens, early twenties? (see
EDGWORTH).
ii). Charles BUTLIN is aged 10 a Farm Lab born Winson, in 1871.
Charles BUTLIN aged 20 in 1881 (born in Winson* approx 1861).
Apprentice boot and shoe maker. Living with the Mitchell family at
Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire.
* Winson is the next village to Coln Rogers.
3. Thomas BUTLIN (son of Edmund and Eleanor) married Eliza GARLAND
(daughter of William GARLAND, a labourer) on October 31st 1848, they were
married at St Peters and Pauls in the Parish of Aston, in the county of
Warwick. Eliza was aged 21 at the time of marriage so was born
around 1827 and approx four years different in ages. Thomas was a farm
labourer and they lived in Aston at the time of their marriage. They
were living at Moor Hall Farm, Sutton Coldfield at the time of the birth
of John. A mark is shown as the signature of Thomas and Eliza.
Witnesses at the wedding also shown by marks are Thomas Garland and Ellen
Garland. In 1881 they are living at ‘Walmley’, Sutton Coldfield.
Thomas is aged 57 from Coln Rogers, Gloucestershire; and a Kitchen Gardener
by profession, his wife Eliza is aged 53 and is shown as being born in
Erdington, Birmingham, and they have two daughters living with them, Eleanor
and Emily, John having left home to marry Hannah. Were Eliza
and John ((above) see Charlotte Sophia (x)) related at all?
Children of Thomas and Eliza
i) John BUTLIN born 26.12.1851 in Sutton Coldfield
(see below)
ii) Eleanor BUTLIN born 1862, aged 19 in 1881 and born in
Tyburn, Warwick. Her occupation is shown as that of a Teacher.

Coldfield. She is a scholar.
4. Phoebe Ann BUTLIN (dau of Edmund and Eleanor) was married on 3rd October 1848 at Coln St Dennis to Charles Fletcher. He was 20 years older than she was. As far as I know they had no children.
5. Edmund James BUTLIN (son of Edmund and Eleanor), aged 53
born approx 1828 in Coln Rogers, Gloucs. He is a Cow Man and an Ag
Lab. He is living with his wife Mary Ann TOWNSEND aged 53, born in
Poulton, Wiltshire, in approx 1828. Both aged 43 in 1871, (Edmund)
James is an Ag Lab; and so is his wife. (Edmund) James was a Servant
(Farm) aged 22 in 1851, born Coln Rogers, living in Sevenhampton, in the
home of Edward Handy a farmer of 400 acres. Note that it appears for a
while that he prefers to call himself by his second name! By 1871
he was an Ag Lab, aged 43, still classed as being born in Coln Rogers,
and now living in Driffield. By 1881 they were at Cerney Fields,
South Cerney, Gloucestershire.

also Ag Labs at Latton, Wiltshire at Cirencester Road.
6. John BUTLIN (son of Edmund and Eleanor), married Elizabeth OWEN
(see OWEN file). They were living
at Oldens, Stonehouse, Gloucs in 1881: John aged 49 is a Gen Lab. Elizabeth
aged 43, born approx 1838 in Stonehouse, Gloucs (Stonehouse is south of
Gloucestershire, West of Stroud). (Were the two servant BUTLINs their
daughters?). Living with them was Eliza’s father William OWEN a widow,
aged 83, born approx 1798 in Dublin, Ireland. His occupation is given
as a Parchester (Slater). If the two servant girls were their daughters,
then they were:
I) Cal or Col BUTLIN (female) born Stonehouse, Gloucestershire
in approx 1863, is a General Servant, Nurse, at the age of 18, living at
Bristol, with PUGH family who were grocers. The head of the PUGH
household, was actually born in Australia.
II) Elizabeth BUTLIN aged 18, born Stonehouse, Gloucs; in
approx 1863 (was she a twin, see above), general servant with TICHBON family
of Westbury onTrymn. Gloucs.
7. Harriet BUTLIN (dau of Edmund and Eleanor), we believe married William COX from Fulbrook, Oxford. If this is correct, then she was still alive in 1881.
8. Charles BUTLIN (son of Edmund and Eleanor). In 1861 he was
living with his sister Charlotte and her family in Sutton Coldfield.
Charles married about 1862, Henrietta, born 1837 in Bristol, Somerset.
They were living at Hill House, No.3 Lodge, Mangotsfield, Gloucs (Mangotsfield
is now a part of Bristol) in 1881: Charles aged 43 is a Farm Lab; Henrietta
is aged 44. They have three children:
i) Charles BUTLIN aged 18, unmarried, a Rounder in a Boot

his christening is given as 14th June 1863 at Coln St Dennis.

of Bourton-on-the-Water if Cold Aston, or East of Bristol if Cold Ashton),
born in approx 1869.
iii) Eleanor BUTLIN, aged 6, born in Mangotsfield, Gloucs;
in approx 1875.
9. Robert BUTLIN (son of Edmund and Eleanor). Living at Stoke Hill, Westbury on Trymn, Gloucs; in 1881: Robert, aged 41, is an Ag Lab. He is living with his wife Sarah Ann Harris ® (don’t know why this R sign is shown on the documents); aged 45, she was born in approx 1836 in Coln St Aldwyns in Gloucs; (the next village). Does R mean retired? Can anyone shed any light on this? I am unsure whether they had any children. In 1871 they are living at Coln St.Aldwyns and have no children, his occupation is given as an Ag.Lab. Robert and Sarah Ann married on 02nd November 1861 at Coln Rogers.
10. Charlotte BUTLIN (dau of Edmund and Eleanor) married John GARLAND born Erdington, Birmingham. (Unsure whether there is a connection between John and Eliza, Thomas’s wife, who was also born in Erdington - see above). In 1861 in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham there is the following listed: John GARLAND aged 23 a Carter from Erdington (born 1838), Charlotte aged 20 from Gloucester, (coln? W) (born 1841) and Charles BUTLIN aged 23 brother-in-law an agricultural labourer also born in Gloucester (born 1838). This info from the 1861 census is what my late father had written down in the BUTLIN file, this was before 1988. It was only thanks to John Lokesley, in Gloucs; who searched the 1841 census for me (June/July 2000), that we were able to link them to the main lineage. In 1881 they were living in Handworth<sp>, Staffs.

i) John GARLAND aged 12 in 1881; born 1869 in Perry Common,

Hannah was living at Wellsford-on-Avon; when my Mum (Margaret)’s parents Jack and Rose (mentioned below) visited her in 1933, Hannah was in her 80’s. Mum’s father’s nick-name for her was ‘Three-Penny Bit’, because she was so small. In the 1881 census my father (Derek Kendall, see below) has listed that they were living at Minworth, near Pipe Hall, John was aged 29, a cow man and farm labourer and Hannah was aged 35.

At the time of marriage, he was 26, she was 23; and they were both living at 21 North Road, Birmingham. Their witnesses were George Edwin Parsons shown by a mark, and Sarah Wood.
